INTRODUCTION

Following your surgery to have a peritoneal dialysis catheter placed in your abdomen, it is essential to follow the care instructions provided to ensure a smooth recovery. This brochure outlines important information about eating, activity, pain management, and potential concerns following your surgery.

This brochure aims to guide you through the recovery process after your surgery. By following these instructions and staying in contact with your healthcare team, you can ensure a smooth recovery and manage your dialysis treatment better.

The placement of a Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter is a surgical procedure and you will be given anesthesia. Please refrain from driving a car or drinking alcohol for 24 hours. It is also strongly recommended to have a responsible adult stay with you overnight.

WHAT CAN I EAT AND DRINK AFTER SURGERY?

After surgery, you can return to your usual meals once you feel ready. If you experience nausea or vomiting, anti-nausea medication can be prescribed by your doctor.

If you are prescribed anti-nausea medication, follow the instructions on the package carefully. You can gradually resume your normal diet as you start feeling better.

HOW MUCH ACTIVITY IS SAFE?

Day of Surgery

Rest at home. You may begin walking shortly after surgery, such as walking to the bathroom or kitchen.

First 4 to 6 Weeks

Avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 lbs (5 kg);
Refrain from strenuous activities like sit-ups, weight lifting, running, gardening, or golfing.
Do not swim;
During your peritoneal dialysis training, your nurse will provide more specific information on exercises and sports that are safe for you.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY DRESSING (BANDAGE)?

The dressing protects the catheter and helps keep it in place. Keep the dressing on for 7 days after your surgery;
Do not remove the dressing on your own. After seven days, your nurse will change it for you;
Keep the dressing clean and dry at all times;
If the dressing becomes wet, dirty, or you notice any signs of infection, contact your dialysis nurse for further instructions or guidance.

WHEN CAN I SHOWER OR BATHE?

Do not shower or bathe until your dialysis nurse confirms it is safe to do so;
In the meantime, you can wash yourself using a sponge at the bathroom sink;
Avoid getting your dressing wet.

HOW DO I MANAGE PAIN?

You will be given a prescription for pain medication. Take it as directed and avoid alcohol while taking the medication.
Some pain or discomfort after surgery is normal, but it should improve over time.
Gradually reduce the amount of medication after the first day, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
Continue taking your regular medications as usual unless your doctor gives different instructions.

HOW CAN I PREVENT AND MANAGE CONSTIPATION?

Constipation can be a common issue, especially when taking pain medication;
If you haven’t had a bowel movement within two days after surgery, you may be prescribed a laxative;
Follow the prescribed instructions for taking laxatives carefully;
Do not use other over-the-counter laxatives, such as Milk of Magnesia or Fleet enemas, if you have kidney failure.

WHAT PROBLEMS SHOULD I WATCH FOR?

If you experience any of the following, contact your dialysis nurse immediately or go to the Emergency Department if it is outside of office hours:

Bleeding that does not stop: If you notice any bleeding, press on the dressing for 15 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop after applying pressure, contact your doctor or go to the emergency room;
Fever: A temperature above 38°C (101°F) may be a sign of infection;
A soaking wet abdominal dressing: If clear fluid leaks and soaks through your dressing, contact your dialysis nurse;
Severe pain: If your pain is not relieved by the prescribed medication, contact your dialysis nurse.
